The process technology field relies on advanced computer technology and instrumentation to operate a variety of equipment systems and industrial processes. Process technology jobs are found in many fields, including manufacturing, power generation and water treatment. Every industry involved in chemical processing - from extracting and refining fuels to making products using chemicals - uses process technology to control its systems. Because of the wide variety of industries that use process technology, there is a range of job options available in this field.
Gas and Oil Refinery Operators are essential refinery jobs tasked with maintaining and controlling petroleum-refining operations.
Panel Operators determine when to change equipment controls through analysis of specifications, schedules, logs and test results. When these changes have been determined, the refinery control panel operator is responsible for starting pumps and opening valves to regulate the flow of product, or communicating with other workers the changes concerning pump operation, opening and closing valves or checking temperatures.
The refinery control panel operator is also responsible for recording, compiling, reporting and documenting operating data, while maintaining and repairing equipment, inspecting pipelines, and monitoring process indicators, instruments, gauges and meters to detect and report any possible problems. When problems arise, it is the refinery control panel operator's job to coordinate shutdowns and performing tests in order to check quality and grade of product. When the product has been approved, the refinery control panel operator prepares calculations for receipts and deliveries as well as clamping down the seals around valves to secure tanks.
Field operators inspect, maintain and make minor repairs to wellsites and equipment, production facilities, trucks, etc. to ensure safety, environmental and operational compliance. These workers also operate specialized pumping-related equipment, collect and record all vital statistical information (like chart and meter pressure readings), and make sure that all of the facilities and roads are well-maintained.
Because of the rapid advancement of technology, most employers require qualified candidates to have a Process Technology degree, which is an Associate's degree.
Operators must understand mathematical theories and applications including basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus and statistics. Mechanical aptitude is essential. Chemistry and physics provide a solid background for this position, as does engineering and good communication skills.
It is crucial for a refinery operator to understand operation monitoring, troubleshooting, critical thinking, and equipment maintenance. It is equally important for a candidate to possess time management skills.
The refinery control panel operator must be able to control equipment operation and systems, and must possess the aptitude to understand and know when to apply changes to the controls. This includes the ability to inspect the product to ensure that the controls are set to optimize production. When a problem does arise, it is the refinery control panel operator's job to troubleshoot the problem and find its source. This requires that the candidate possesses knowledge and application of the scientific process to solve these problems.
Safety is the top priority for employers in the Oil and Natural Gas industry and there are many regulations and standard practices in place to ensure a safe environment. Employees are required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment in many circumstances while on the job site. Additionally, employees receive extensive safety training so that everyone can identify potential problems and safely correct them. In certain occupations, workers could be exposed to hazardous materials, uncomfortable noise levels, and equipment that can be dangerous if not operated properly.
